HTC One X unveiled: Quad-core Tegra 3, HD display, LTE, launches on AT&T by end of April

HTC on Sunday unveiled a trio of new smartphones at Mobile World Congress, capped off by the flagship of flagships: the HTC One X. BGR took the wraps off of this stunning smartphone back in November, and the details within our exclusive report are now confirmed. The One X features a quad-core NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor clocked at 1.5GHz, a 4.6-inch 1,280 x 720-pixel high-definition Super LCD 2 display, an 8-megapixel rear camera, a 1.3-megapixel front facing camera for 720p video chats, 1GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal eMMC storage, embedded 4G LTE and Sense 4.0 atop Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich — and it’s all packed into a case that is just 9.27 millimeters thin. The phone also includes Beats Audio across all multimedia apps, not just HTC’s music player, and 25GB of free Dropbox storage for two years, which includes several iCloud-like Sense features such as auto-uploading photos. The HTC One X finds itself atop the totem pole in HTC’s new “HTC One” lineup, which will designate its flagship devices moving forward. The specs listed above tell an impressive story, but we were fortunate enough to spend some time with the handset ahead of HTC’s announcement and the specs definitely don’t tell the whole story.
HTC said that its new HTC One devices focus on three main pillars: Amazing design and user experience, an amazing camera, and an amazing multimedia experience. We’ll discuss how the One X fares in each of these categories in our hands-on with the device, but one area in particular managed to really blow us away: the camera.
The camera in HTC’s new One-series phones is a complete departure from the technology used on the vendor’s earlier devices. HTC One smartphones each include an “HTC ImageChip,” which is a physical chip dedicated solely to the camera system. The 8-megapixel One X camera features an f2.0 aperture and HTC’s amazing new image capture software, which includes revamped HDR technology and integrated Instagram-like filters.
Perhaps most impressive of all, the new cameras across HTC’s One lineup are capable of capturing an image, saving the image and preparing to take a new shot all in the span of 0.7 seconds. Still not impressed? Images are actually initially captured in RAW format now to ensure the highest quality before being converted to JPG, and the One X can capture 8-megapixel still photos while recording 1080p HD video.
HTC had a rough fourth quarter in an otherwise stellar year, and the smartphone maker vowed that it would narrow its focus and concentrate on distinguishing itself from the competition in 2012. The One X, which manages to pack a remarkable amount of technology into a beautifully-designed package, is a terrific start. This smartphone is as sleek as it is capable, and it sets the bar high for Android smartphones at Mobile World Congress 2012. In fact, I can only think of one smartphone that might be able to compete with the One X, but it isn’t expected to make an appearance at this year’s show.
The HTC One X will launch on AT&T by the end of April, and HTC’s first three One-branded smartphones will be available from a combined 130 partners around the world in 2012. We’ll have more on this sleek smartphone shortly in our hands-on.

Huawei officially unveils the Android OS 4.0 Ascend D quad, “the World’s Fastest Smartphone”

Huawei has officially announced and introduced the Ascend D quad, dubbed as “the World’s Fastest Smartphone”. This will be available from April 2012 in the following locations: China, Australia, Europe, Asia-Pacific, North and South America, and the Middle East… no details yet on Canada, but the press release was published on the Canada Newswire so it’s a good guess we’ll get this here.
The specs are impressive and will certainly hel Huawei achieve a better brand perspective. Usually they have low end devices that have low specs, but the Ascend D quad is an Android OS 4.0 powered device that has a quad-core 1.2GHz/1.5GHz processor, 4.5-inch 720P high definition touchscreen display with (PPI 330). The good specs keep coming, 8.9mm thin, packed with a 8MP camera that shoots 1080p HD videos and a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, a 1800mAh battery that Huawei says “lasts for one to two days with normal usage”.
Huawei also introduced the a couple other devices, the Ascend D quad XL and the Ascend D1. Both basically have the same specs, the Ascend D quad XL has a 2500mAh battery (two to three days of usage) and is 10.9 mm slim. As for the Ascend D1 runs, this is another OS 4.0 Android with a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor with a 1670mAh battery.
All these devices are such a massive jump for Huawei. No word on pricing. For some reason there are no pics yet, only one that was taken from the show floor in Barcelona.

Google to Release a 7-inch Nexus Tablet, May Have Android 5.0 Jelly Bean onboard

Google is highly expected to launch the "Google Nexus tablet" this summer. The device will reportedly offer a 7-inch display with 1280 x 800 resolution, Google will produce around 1.5 to the 2 million units initially. The tablet may also be Manufactured my Motorola.

The Nexus Tablet is rumored to cost $199 ONLY. The OS is currently rumored to be ICS 4.0, butJelly Bean 5.0 is not out of the question as the tablet could see the light of day at the I/O developer conference, which is scheduled for late June this summer. So we can expect a JB Tablet from Google, it will also be the first Jelly bean Device on the Market too. Why Not? Google has the right to Exclusively put the OS on her devices first!

Samsung Announces The Galaxy Beam: A 4-Inch Gingerbread Phone With A Projector

Looks like Samsung is getting a head start on its MWC announcements, and one of the first devices to hit the scene is the Galaxy Beam. While the Beam's specs aren't all that impressive, it does have one trick up its sleeve:

• 4.0-Inch  480*800 TFT display
• 1GHz dual-core processor
• 6GB RAM (this must be a typo, but that's what the Beam's landing page  says)
• 5MP rear shooter, 1.3MP front camera
• 8GB built-in storage with microSD slot
• 2000 mAh battery
• 15 lumen projector

...did you catch the kicker? Yeah, it's packing a projector. The idea of a projector in a phone is nothing new , but it has been a while since we've seen a rehash of the idea. While 15 lumens probably isn't going to blind anyone, it's definitely enough to brighten up a dark room when the Beam throws its 50-inch HD projection up on the wall, and the 2000mAh battery should be enough to keep the party going for, well, at least a little while.

At this time, there's no word on pricing and availability.

HTC MWC lineup detailed - meet the One E, S and X

Three days before the HTC MWC press conference the curtain was lifted a little bit higher and we got to learn a bit more about their upcoming Android smartphones. As we know the Taiwanese company will unveil the HTC One X, HTC One E and HTC One S (yes, they do spell that).

The high-flying HTC One X leaked numerous times before and is by far the most interesting of the bunch. It features a quad-core (okay, okay - 4-PLUS-1) Tegra 3 chipset and a 720p LCD, plus an 8 megapixel camera on the back.

HTC set up a teaser on its Facebook page for the One X. Thesmartphone sketch with the number 5 in the middle is said to refer to the number of processing cores in the Tegra 3 chipset (counting the companion core). Alternatively, HTC might have a couple of surprises for us and announce 5 smartphones at the MWC. They unveiled just as many last year so it's not unimaginable we'll see a replay.

The HTC One E will sit in the middle of the pecking order. The previously known as HTC Ville smartphone will feature a 4.3" qHD screen, which might even be a Super AMOLED. We just got the first benchmark of the device and thinks are looking quite promising for its dual-core chipset.

The HTC One S managed to score 60.6 fps at NenaMark2, which is quite an impressive score. To put things in perspective, the most powerful of the current HTC smartphones, the Sensation XE, scored just under 27fps on the same benchmark.

Finally we come to the HTC One S (previously Primo), which will be the entry level offering and will come to succeed the extremely popular Widlfire S. It will reportedly run on a 1GHz single-core CPU and feature a 3.7" Super AMOLED.

Rumors have it we won't see a tablet announcement from HTC this year. But don't worry - the Taiwanese haven't abandoned the tablet market, they just need some more time to prepare their next slate and it should come out by the end of the year. Also, they might be waiting for the 4G networks to gain a larger market share as the next HTC tablet is said to feature LTE connectivity.

Finally, we also understood that HTC has big plans about integrating NFC in its smartphones, and it will be available on every one of their smartphones from Q3. Hopefully, the One X and One E will have it a few months in advance.

Some HTC to get Early Access Preview of ICS with sense 4.0

HTC is calling it a "Early Access Preview". Ice Cream Sandwich and HTC Sense 4.0 will be in a type of beta test for a select 300 HTC Sensation and Sensation XE users.

Here is the deal, HTC is allowing a few hundred HTC Sensation and Sensation XE owners a trial run at the new Ice Cream Sandwich and HTC Sense 4.0 operating systems before the official release, giving the HTC users a chance to test out the programing. 

HTC was quoted saying “HTC is doing something new and pretty cool in the coming days: we’ll be releasing an “early access preview” of our ICS upgrade for the Sensation and Sensation XE. This will be limited in scope (just a few hundred users and only in Europe) because we’re still scaling up back-end resources for general availability worldwide, and our hope is people will play with it and enjoy getting used to the ICS experience with Sense. We’ll be doing similar previews for other devices in the future, too.”

Hopefully, the United States HTC community will also get to test drive the new operating systems as well.

Android 5.0 Jelly Bean tipped for Q2 2012

Android 5.0 Jelly Bean may arrive as early as Q2 2012, supply chain sources claim, with Google apparently integratingChrome OS functionality for dual-boot tablets and netbooks. Those aren’t the search giant’s only dual-OS ambitions, however; insiders tell DigiTimes that Google is pushing Android 5.0 and Windows 8 hybrids to its manufacturing partners, for notebooks, netbooks and tablets that offer the best of both platforms.

Although Google is yet to comment significantly on whether Ice Cream Sandwich has met its expectations in the market, it’s clear that Android 4.0 is yet to gain a significant foothold. According to Google’s own stats, as of February 1 2012 only 1-percent of devices were running ICS, with the majority still on Android 2.3.x Gingerbread.
The dual-booting Android 5.0 Jelly Bean and Windows 8 machines will be able to hot-swap between the two platforms, the sources indicate, rather than demanding a reboot each time. That would give users the opportunity to use Android for its web-centric functionality and speed, while switching to Windows would offer the various legacy and business apps many users still demand. Update: It’s worth remembering that Microsoft’s Windows 8 hardware requirements apparently block second OS installation on ARM-based PCs by users, thanks to a locked Secure Boot system, though it’s unclear whether OEMs are permitted to do so before the hardware leaves the factory. Google is supposedly seeing Android 5.0 as a second chance at the notebook and netbook markets, Chrome OS failing to grab attention as expected, though the tipsters warn that the response to Ice Cream Sandwich has left some partners “conservative” about the new platform.
Part of Google’s challenge is encouraging timely OS updates among vendors. Motorola revealed its timescale for upgrading US Android devices yesterday, with most not expected to see Ice Cream Sandwich until Q3 2012 or later.

HTC Sense 4.0 screenshots leak through Endeavor RUU

The folks at Android Central managed to get their hands on a RUU (ROM Update Utility) for the HTC Endeavor and extracted dozens of screenshots for the upcoming version of HTC's Android skin, Sense 4.0, which will be running on top of Ice Cream Sandwich.

Although we have seen Sense 4.0 once before in a video, these screenshots give a clearer view of the interface. What you see below are screenshots of some of the built-in themes in preview mode, where you can see how the homescreen, lockscreen and application screen will look like once the theme has been applied.

We can see that the lockscreen is almost identical to the present versions of Sense although you can change the look of the lock ring and the application icon background with different themes. We noticed that the font for the large clock strangely is not Roboto, even though the rest of the OS is using it.

The homescreen looks a bit different, due to the presence of a new dock at the bottom of the screen that houses shortcuts to applications, which is more functional that the current dock in HTC phones.
We think the new Sense 4.0 does look very nice. The lack of overly glossy surfaces also makes it look more mature and sophisticated. If at all we must have a custom skin running atop our Android devices, Sense 4.0 would probably be our first choice. And since it is unlikely that HTC will ever sell an Android phone without its custom skin, it's important for the skin to be good, which it seems it is. We just hope it won't take too much of a toll on the performance of the phone.

Google To Make “Big Announcements” About GTV On February 13th

Though some would have you believe Google TV has long been a dead horse, it seems Mountain View hasn’t given up hope just yet: just about a month after a handful of CES announcements, the company put up a Facebook message promising the following:

There’s obviously no way to discern for sure what these “big announcements” might be, but as The Verge says, it’s possible they could entail the yearly GTV update or (more excitingly) a Google-branded device (Nexus TV, anyone?). Either way, we’ll be keeping you updated on the news – good or bad – as it comes in, so keep it locked right here on AP!

[Breaking] Ice Cream Sandwich for more HTC smartphones coming in April

We knew we could trust HTC, and in fact after the already announced devices a second round is ready to be unveiled and we can already tell you about it.

In fact, thanks to a reliable internal source, we received information about an April release of Android 4.0 with HTC Sense 3.5 for the HTC Desire S, Desire HD and Incredible S. The three devices will receive the new firmware on different days during the month, and will follow the upgrades of the Sensation family (confirmed for February) and the EVO 3D (early March).
Thanks HTC for being always ahead listening to its customers and updating the most devices and not just the top ones.

New HTC Ville photos leak, slim waistline and specs reconfirmed

We got yet another portion of leaked HTC Ville live photos, garnished with a nice specs sheet. The Android smartphone is expected to be unveiled by HTC at their press conference on February 26 and slide beneath the Edge in the company's chain of command.

The HTC Ville will reportedly be the slimmest HTC smartphone to this day, having a profile of just 8.9mm. Previously we heard that the Ville will measure just 8mm, but 8.9mm sounds quite great too, especially for a mid-range device. To achieve this, the Taiwanese used a qHD AMOLED panel, which is supposed to have a diagonal of 4.3".

 

A 1.5 GHz dual-core CPU will be keeping things going under the hood, while Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 4.0 will provide the eye-candy at the front. The chipset which will power the Ville hasn't been specified just yet, but we are guessing it will be the MSM8260 Snapdragon which we came to know from the Sensation XE.

The HTC MWC event is now just 20 days away, so we'll soon find out the complete specs sheet. As you probably already know, we'll be on site covering it live for you, and making sure you don't miss a thing.
